The Transition House was started to give children on the streets an opportunity to live in a safe home with a bed, clothes, food and the love of Christian foster parents. Many come from abusive homes where they have been neglected or their life has been threatened by being involved in occultic practices. Some who express an interest in Christianity face severe persecution or death. Most are malnourished and have parasites, malaria and rashes.
They are started on a self-paced literacy program and taught the basics of living the Christian life. Transition House is a small compound in the city of Jos housing junior high and high school boys helping them to integrate into the community and local church life. Gyero is a village compound located on the outskirts of Jos and houses the elementary school boys. There is now a girls center located in Gyero.
A child is brought to the center by a family member or off the street by one of our staff. The children are brought into the House and provided with a loving and safe home. The intent of the ministry is to educate, disciple and train them to be reintegrated back into their own homes or a foster Christian home.
Most come suspicious and fearful. They have highly developed survival skills to live on the streets and it takes a long time to win their trust and confidence. We are thrilled at the transformation we have seen spiritually, emotionally and physically in the children who have come through the Transition House.
There are two Transition Houses in the Jos, Plateau State area that house many boys and girls and we continue to take in more children all the time. There are three other Transition Houses in cities north of Jos. Our plan is to continue to start more Houses especially in northern Nigeria to help reach out to the children who are in need. The Transition Houses have several Nigerian staff and volunteers who are their foster parents, role models, and teachers.
